Virginia Democrat trying to get Biden to drop out of presidential race, WaPo reports

WASHINGTON (TND) — Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., is trying to form a contingent of Democratic senators to convince President Biden to fold his presidential campaign, the Washington Post reported Friday.

The news comes ahead of President Biden's Friday evening interview with ABC News anchor George Stephanopoulos, a former Democratic political advisor. The interview is expected by many to be an attempt by President Biden to quell concerns about his mental acuity.

Widespread concern about the president's wellness broke out last week after his dismal performance against former President Trump during the first presidential debate. President Biden appeared frail, soft-spoken and unwell. The White House later said the president had a cold.

The White House has fervently defended the president over the past week despite mounting worries within Democratic circles. President Biden received a renewed boost of support from Democratic governors after a closed-door meeting on Wednesday.

I heard three words from the President tonight -- he’s all in. And so am I," California Gov. Gavin Newsom wrote after the meeting. "Joe Biden’s had our back. Now it’s time to have his."

Sen. Warner is reportedly telling his colleagues that President Biden will not be able to defeat President Trump in November, urging them to join him in convincing the president to step aside.

A spokesperson for Sen. Warner did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The National Desk on Friday.

A meeting between Democratic senators and President Biden at the White House is currently under consideration, according to the Washington Post. It is unclear whether President Biden would be open to such a meeting.
